CONTAINEX Creates Space for Art: Mobile Galleries for STRABAG ART

Art doesn't necessarily have to take place within the closed walls of a museum. Together with STRABAG ART, we have transformed CONTAINEX office cabins into mobile, public galleries. The goal of the project is to bring art directly to the people. The exhibitions take place both directly on construction sites and in prominent locations within urban areas. It is a showcase project that uniquely connects industry, architecture, and contemporary art.

A Mobile Gallery on Eight Square Meters

The challenge in this project was as extraordinary as it was inspiring. The question was how to create a protected space for high-quality artworks that is simultaneously absolutely flexible, durable, and mobile. The solution was provided by a specially modified 10' container from CONTAINEX. It was tailored exactly to the requirements of STRABAG ART. Large-scale safety glass and a robust security door protect the valuable exhibits from external influences while simultaneously offering maximum visibility.

Inside, a black foil finish combined with a black floor covering provides a distraction-free, elegant backdrop. Custom lighting and a special rear wall present the artworks in the right light. The exterior of the container is adorned with a striking foil design that immediately catches the eye. This creates a mobile exhibition space that can change its location at any time.

This is exactly where the idea of STRABAG ART comes in. The mobile galleries can be placed flexibly and free-standing on construction sites, thereby complementing existing container structures. In the midst of bustling construction activity, this creates a surprising and beautiful visual anchor point. Contemporary art is made accessible around the clock with a very low threshold for employees as well as for passers-by. In addition to their deployment on construction sites, these ART Containers also make stops at prominent hotspots such as the Künstlerhaus or the Hübner Kursalon in downtown Vienna.

Artistic Visions in Modular Space

Two of the prominent artists whose works were presented in the art container in Vienna are Marcin Zawicki and Peter Cvik. Both are recognition prize winners of the renowned STRABAG Artaward International.

The Polish artist Marcin Zawicki teaches as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He is known for his fascinating worlds, in which he transforms real sculptures into surreal paintings. In the ART Container, he presented his work "The Grand Odalisque, 2025". For this exhibition, he expanded the classic painting with a tangible 3D installation within the container, as well as an augmented reality layer created by Konrad Zamiar. The functional container thus became an immersive portal into another reality.

The Slovak artist Peter Cvik also utilized the mobile space for his work "Dream Before You Sleep, 2023". Cvik earned his doctorate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. In his works, he processes urban fragments and landscapes that flow onto the canvas like layers from his memory. For him, architecture and thus the act of constructing is an essential "trace of humanity". The presentation of his work in public space creates a direct connection between the viewer, the art, and the urban environment.

Breaking Down Barriers, Creating Access

The STRABAG ART art containers impressively demonstrate how flexible space can be used to create social added value. They break down the barriers of traditional art institutions. In doing so, they provide people with unexpected moments of pause and inspiration in their direct working or living environment.
